The 6th APIRA International Conference, with the theme of opportunities and challenges for the Internet in the post-financial tsunami era, was successfully held in Hong Kong on Aug 6-7, 2009. This conference presented three sessions, which are keynote speeches, country/regional reports, and research panel.
Professor Guanrong Chen of the City University of Hong Kong, a pioneering scholar of complex networks started the keynote speech with introducing the emerging theory and methodology to the Internet. Another keynote speaker, Professor Yan Ma from the China Education and Research Network (CERNET)—an organization who is focusing on the building of a next generation Internet in the mainland-- highlighted the blueprint of the IPv6-based infrastructure and applications. Two other keynote speakers are Dr. Fumi Yamazaki of the University of Electro-Communications from Japan and Mr. Jack Xu from Xiaonei.com, one of the largest social network sevice providers in China. They analyzed the promises and problems with online games, online video and online communities respectively.
During the country/regional reports session, CNNIC from China, NII from Japan, KISA from Korea, TWNIC from Taiwan, CityU of Hong Kong, and University of Macau released findings on use of the Internet in respective country or region. The speakers of research panel session analyzed the market potentials for mobile Internet, online retailing, online video, online games, online advertising, and other hot issues of the new media in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, mainland China and other country or region.
Moreover, the Board of APIRA amended the constitution by cancelling the distinction of RMA and AMA. The Board also discussed the construction of website, the promotion of APIRA, and would decide the city to hold the next conference by this October.
