Now China has 162 million netizens and 44 million of them use mobile phones to connect the Internet.
On July 18, 2007, CNNIC issued The 20th Statistical Report on China's Internet Development in Beijing, China. It is reported that as of June 30, 2007, China's netizen number had reached 162 million, which means that there were 100 new netizens per minute in average in the first half of the year, and the increased number of the first half year is approaching to the amount of increase of all last year, and the Internet penetration came to 12.3%; there were 122 million broadband network users, and the netizens using mobile phones to connect the Internet was up to 44.30 million, 3.6 times of the last year; there were 9.18 million domestic domain names, of which CN domain name enjoyed substantial increase of registration with total amount of 6.15 million, further enhancing its mainstream position at home; China's website amount had reached 1.31 million and 810,000 of them are with the domain name of .CN, having an annual growth rate of 137.5%, which means the amount of .CN websites got far ahead of .COM websites for the first time.
The Report shows that there are 67.10 million computers connected to the Internet in China, an increase of 7.70 million sets than the amount in the end of year 2006.In addition, it is growingly popular in China to connect the Internet by a mobile phone as a result of the decreased cost in it. So far, 27.3 percent of Chinese netizens, or 44.30 million persons use mobile phones to connect the Internet. According to the investigation, 37.2 percent of netizens announced they usually went to an Internet bar. There was an increase of 5 percentage points on surfing in Internet bars in the first half year. This kind of access to the Internet exceeded the number of netizens surfing in working sites, becoming the second major site for surfing online. China has owned the typical characteristics for the period of rise of Internet. The means of connecting to the Internet are going to diversification with more conformity with the development of Internet.
Furthermore, the Report conducted an overall analysis on the application of Internet. It was observed that the Internet's functions as obtaining of information, recreation and communication were in common use yet its role as a life helper was not given a full play. The representative application of Internet as an information channel, i.e. netnews and search engine have been utilized by 76.3% of the total amount of netizens. Instant communication and electronic mails are the typical application of the Internet as a communication tool. These two kinds of application has a higher utilization rate with 69.8% of netizens using the instant communication and 55.4% of them using electronic mails. The Internet's three kinds of representative application on recreation function are online music, online movie and television and online game with higher utilization rate. The utilization rate of online music is 68.5% and 47.0% of netizens have played online games.
