The 3 rd APIRA International Conference was Brought to a Successful Close in Taipei

From August 9 to 10, the 3 rd International Conference of Asia-Pacific Internet Research Alliance with the theme of “Internet Statistics – Utilization and Creativity” was successfully held at in Taipei . The meeting was hosted by Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC).
During the two days' meeting, over 50 specialists and scholars from China , Korea , Japan and Malaysia discussed on the impact that the development of the Internet had brought to the regional economy, and exchanged ideas over relevant statistical methodologies. By sharing the dissertation and carrying out group discussions, the representatives had absorbed a great deal of latest statistics and research achievements. Member reports and theme speeches are inclusive of the penetration and application of broadband Internet, strategies of narrowing the digital gap, opportunities of newly emerged internet business, behavior analysis of younger generation internet users and so on. A comparative report on different members' statistics became the most attractive highlight to the attendees and local media. The report shows that Korea has the highest penetration rate of the Internet and broadband connection in Asia Pacific region - by the end of 2005, the figure was 72.8% and 89% respectively.
The board of APIRA summarized the one year's achievements of the alliance, and placed its next year's emphasis on expanding the membership scale. In order to achieve this goal, the board of directors concentrated in modifying the terms in APIRA Constitution regarding qualification of membership, allowing more interested organizations and individuals feel easier to join. The board also edited the core questions adopted in the joint survey, making it more suitable for members to execute and more adaptable to the international best practice. In coordination with each question, a series of comparative indicators were set up. The indicators and the questionnaire template will be posted on APIRA website shortly.
