47.9% of Kids aged 3 to 5 Use Internet in South Korea

'Survey on the Computer and Internet Usage' conducted by NIDA(National Internet Development Agency of Korea) in December 2005 shows that 47.9% of preschoolers aged 3 to 5 use the Internet, and 64.3% of kids aged 5 use the Internet at least more than once within the last month(44.6% for the aged 4, 33.5% for the aged 3). This survey adopts the current situation which users start to use the Internet at their very younger ages, and it is conducted to expand the sample size newly including aged 3 to 5 about their Internet usage.

As of December 2005, 72.8%(33.01 millions) of those who are aged 6 and older use the wired or wireless Internet more than once within the last month (±0.61% sampling error, 95% confidential level). Those have increased by 2.6%p and 1.43 millions of people respectively from the previous year.
For the Internet use rate by gender, 78.5% of all males (17.78 millions) and 67.2% of all females (15.23 millions) use the Internet, which shows that the use rate of males is higher than that of females by 11.3p%. However, the divide in the component ratio of Internet users by gender has slightly narrowed.
For the Internet use rate by age, Internet use rate among aged 6 to 19 is 97.8%, followed by 97.9% for 20's, 91% for 30's, which shows that more than 90% of those aged 30's and younger use the Internet. The Internet use rates of aged 40's and 50's are 68.7% and 35.7% respectively which have increased substantially by 6.2%p and 4.6%p from the previous year.

For the Internet use rate by occupations, Internet use rate of students is the highest with 99.1%, followed by 93.8% for white-collars and 94.2% for professional/managers. For the rate by educational attainment, the use rate of university graduates is the highest with 94.5%. However, Internet use rates have dramatically grown among high school graduate (73.4% which increase 6.4%p from the previous year), junior-high school graduates (29.4% which increase 4.4%p from the previous year) and elementary school graduates (18.8% which increase 5.8%p from the previous year) those who have relatively low use rates.

For the major timeline using the Internet, workers mainly use it during office hours (31.2% from 15 to 16 o'clock) and after works (27.8% from 21 to 22 o'clock). Students use it mainly in the evening from 21 to 22 o'clock (32.9%). For main reasons for using the Internet, users access to the Internet mainly for an e-mail/ chatting room and for research/information (86.9% respectively), followed by entertainment (78.7%), blog/homepage(48.2%), shopping/reservation(48.1%) and financial transactions(37.2%).

In the aspect of communication on the Internet, 90.0% of Internet users have e-mail accounts (1.6 accounts on average) and 45.2% of them use the messenger service(7.4 hours on average). Moreover, 46.5% of Internet users have used blogs or Minihompy sties before, and 37.1% of Internet users have their own blogs or Minihompies.
